Coping With a Move to a New Town

There may come a time in your life when you will need to uproot the family and move to a new town. If the kids are old enough to understand what’s happening, they may have a range of emotions. If they are happy and excited to start afresh, that’s fantastic! But they may have doubts, fears, or concerns. Here are some tips to make the transition smooth and as drama-free as possible.

Keeping in Touch with Friends

Your child may be sad to move away from his friends. Assure him that you will arrange visits whenever possible and they can communicate regularly via phone, text, email, Skype, or good old fashioned letters. (Remember those?) You should try to keep the focus on all the new kids he will meet and the new friendships he will create. There is always room for new relationships. Arrange for your child to meet with some local kids before the big move if you are able to. This way, he’ll look forward to seeing them again once you settle into the new place.

Helping with Decorating and Making the Place Your Own

Let your child know that he can have a hand in setting up the new home. Permit him to arrange his room how he likes and to help you unpack and select new items for the household. This will make him feel at home and in more control of what’s going on around him. He will appreciate being included in the process rather than watching it unfold around him.

Plan a Housewarming Party

A great way to celebrate a new milestone like a new move is with a festive party. Throw a housewarming party for adults and kids to mix and mingle, share food and drink, and get to know one another. Let your child help plan the party and with making the food. He can also decorate the home for the guests. A party will make the move something to smile about and will take his mind off any worried feelings.
