Messages to Teach Your Kids This Holiday Season

The holiday season is the perfect time of year to instill values in our children that will last a lifetime. It’s a joyous time of year where we can reflect on what we are thankful for and to give help to those less fortunate. Respect, giving back, and patience are three lessons we can give our children that will help them grow as individuals and as part of the larger community around them. These messages will make the holiday season even brighter.

Respect Paying respect to all life is a valuable holiday lesson. Not only should children learn to respect people, but animals and the world around us too. Teach your kids to value others and the Earth and treat everything with kindness and care. They will learn that by showing respect they will earn it back in return.

Giving Back There are so many people around the world who are less fortunate than we are. Even a small effort goes a long way for someone in need. Teach your kids about charity and donating money, items, and time. While need is felt year-round, the holidays are a time when those in need can use additional food, clothing, or companionship. Animals need help too, so consider helping at a shelter or donating food. The act of giving is so much more fulfilling than getting something yourself.

Patience  With all the anticipation of the holidays, from family gatherings to gift giving to a new year ahead, kids could become anxious and antsy. This is a great time to teach them the virtue of patience and consideration. Instill the values of being calm and collected. As they say, “The best things come to those who wait!”
