Healthy Food Swaps The Kids Will Actually Want

When it comes to our kids, we want them to be healthy.

Strong bones and muscles, lots of energy, and a well-balanced wellbeing. Part of keeping our kids healthy is what we feed them. Good nutrition is the cornerstone of overall health, so we must set a good example, and go for the groceries that fuel their bodies most efficiently.

Taste-Tested

Of course, kids want their food to taste good. They’re not going to eat something bland or boring. That’s why food swaps are so effective. The kids can still eat what they love, but with some healthier substitutes, the meals and snacks will become more nutritious.

Swaps To Sample

Here are some food swap suggestions you can try at home. Your kids will enjoy the variety, and you’ll feel better about what’s going into their growing bodies.

  • Replace ½ the cheese on pizza with diced veggies
  • Use Greek yogurt in salad dressings instead of mayonnaise
  • Top frozen yogurt with fresh fruit and nuts vs. chocolate chips or sprinkles
  • Stir raisins or some peanut butter into oatmeal in place of added sugar
  • Serve fat-free or low-fat milk instead of full-fat
  • Sip on seltzer with a squeeze of lemon rather than regular soda
  • Eat whole fruits instead of drinking fruit juice
  • Serve tomato-based sauces on pasta rather than creamy high-fat sauces
  • Make sandwiches on whole wheat or whole grain bread vs. white bread
  • Bake French “fries” instead of frying them in oil
  • Stock up on non-sugary cereal and replace ½ of their favorite with the healthier variety
  • Grill chicken strips to replace breaded nuggets
  • Top salads with beans instead of croutons
  • Freeze bananas and serve in place of ice cream pops
  • Toss the chewy candies and give them dried fruit

There are lots of ways to make smarter eating choices. Do you have some swaps you’d like to share with the AMC community? Creativity is always appreciated!
