Fun Ways to Introduce a New Significant Other to Your Child

If you are a single parent or divorced from your former spouse, there may come a time when you become part of a serious romantic partnership. Once the relationship is secure and long term, you will certainly need to bring this person into your child’s life. Kids will take this news in a variety of ways, but the best way to make the introduction a smooth one is to make it fun! Here are some ways to introduce your special someone to your child so that it will be a positive experience for everyone, especially your child.

Have a Picnic

A casual setting like the park is a nice place to meet someone new. The outdoor air is relaxing and there is lots of space so your child doesn’t feel confined. Over tasty snacks and lite sandwiches, your significant other and your child can get to know one another while taking in a nice day in the open environment. After eating, you can play catch or take a stroll and chat. Your child will enjoy the lack of stuffiness and will feel at ease doing something that feels natural and familiar. By the end of the day, your child and your special someone will have learned a lot about one another and will look forward to the next time they connect.

Make Dinner Together

Making a meal together is a great way to bond. Teamwork and coordination are skills that help to form bonds, even between strangers. Your child and your significant other can make small talk and get to know one another while prepping and cooking, and if there are any lulls in the conversation, they can focus on making the food. Once the meal is ready to eat, you can all talk over dinner and they can get to know more about each other. They will be proud of the meal you all created as a team and you can plan what you’ll make the next time you get together.

Take a Trip to an Amusement Park

Kids love the excitement of an amusement park, so by sharing a fun experience like that with someone new will create a positive association with that person. Your child and significant other can go on rides together and enjoy snacks at the park. Even if your child is shy and there is not much to talk about at first, there will be plenty of activity to keep everyone entertained. This fun loving activity will make your child feel like the center of attention and the day will be enjoyable regardless of an immediate connection with your significant other.
