Fun Ways to Get the Kids off the Couch and Moving
Remember when kids played outside and ran around until sunset? Perhaps there was a bit of TV watching here and there and some indoor games when the weather was bad, but mostly, playing meant moving. These days, far too many kids are glued to the couch, playing video games, staring at the TV, or tapping away at smart phones and tablets. Yes, those things are amazing inventions, and some time with them can be valuable, but we need to get our kids moving again. Physical activity is so important to our kids’ health and well-being. We want them to live long and productive lives and feel well while doing so. Here are some fun ideas to get the kids up and moving!
Jump Rope
A simple jump rope can provide tons of fun, not to mention great cardiovascular activity. Take the kids outdoors in an open area and see who can jump the longest without tripping over the rope. Try double jumps and swinging the rope under their feet side to side. For the more advanced jumpers, try Double Dutch. The kids will have a blast and feel proud of their jumping improvement each time they jump rope. Who knew such a simple thing could be so much fun!
Hula Hooping Contest
Hula hooping is a great exercise, but kids will just feel like they are playing a game. It’s great for developing coordination and builds core muscle tone. See who can keep the hoop spinning on their hips the longest. Try two or three hoops as the kids advance. Kids even like to swirl the hoops on their arms and legs. You’ll feel like you’ve gone back a few decades while hula hooping away!
Dance Routine
Kids love dancing to all the latest hits and don’t even realize how terrific dancing is as a form of exercise. Play some upbeat tunes and let the kids choreograph a simple dance number. They will delight in performing for the adults and their practice will pay off physically. If they don’t want to make up a routine, just play the music and let them freestyle!
