Belly-Warming After-School Snacks
Those cold winter days are fast approaching, so kids will certainly look forward to something delicious to warm their little bellies after a long day of school or daycare. Rather than the usual piece of fruit or cookies and milk, it’s time to winterize after-school munching with something well-suited for the colder weather. A nice wholesome and homey snack will have kids full ‘till dinnertime and they will love the treats you’ve prepared with love. Try these after-school ideas as fall is getting colder and the months to follow will find the temperatures dipping even further. Enjoy!
Hot Cocoa for Kids
Kids love hot cocoa so why not prep a nice warm mug of this delicious drink for them when they get home from school? But you can make this traditional drink even better by taking it up a notch or two. Rather than adding water to a packet of cocoa mix, use warm low-fat or skim milk to make it richer. You can also use soy milk or another type if your child cannot consume lactose. On top of the cocoa, add a handful of mini marshmallows and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg. Serve with a biscotti or another long-shaped cookie or biscuit for dipping. If you really want to make it special, add a dollop of whipped cream. Kids will sip this up with a smile!
Individual “Peach Pie”
Pie is a delicious treat, but who has time to whip up a whole pie? Here’s the solution – a mini peach pie you can make quickly. Here’s how… Open a small can of diced peaches in syrup and pour into a bowl. In a separate cup, sprinkle 3 crushed graham crackers into the bottom and pour the peaches on top. Heat in the microwave for 45 seconds or until heated through. Top with a dollop of whipped cream or a small scoop of vanilla frozen yogurt or ice cream. Serve up and the kids will devour it with glee!
Mini Pizzas
It’s hard to find a kid who doesn’t love pizza, so why not serve some as an after school treat? Take a mini pita round or English muffin and top with a spoonful of pizza sauce and a sprinkle of shredded mozzarella cheese. Add toppings like diced peppers, mushrooms, and fresh basil and heat in the microwave for speed or the oven for a crispier pizza. Kids will love this special treat and can even help make their own the next time.
