Dinnertime Discussions – Make the Most of Family Time
Making time for family meals is always important.
Of course, not every family is able to make this a regular thing, but if you’re able to, try to have meals together as a family as often as you can. When everyone is together for a meal, you can reconnect and be more involved in one another’s lives. We’re all so busy nowadays, so this hour or so is meaningful, especially for the children.
When you gather ‘round the table for a meal, aside from enjoying the food, make the effort to spark family discussions. You can talk about school or camp, something that’s going on in the news (age-appropriate), something your family is looking forward to, such as a visit from relatives or an upcoming vacation, or even a movie or TV show you just watched together. The point is to communicate, letting your children know that you are interested in their points of view and want them to be heard.
Be sure you keep the conversations light, as you don’t want to bring any tension to the table. If there is a serious topic to discuss, or your child has misbehaved in some way at school or at home, find another time to address the situation. This way, dinnertime together will always have a positive association.
If you are able to have other meals as a family, that would be extra-special. Starting the day with a family breakfast will set the tone for a delightful day. You can give your children encouragement and advice as they embark on the day ahead. Perhaps get up a little bit earlier to make time for this.
Make these family dinners healthy and happy. Serve nutritious food and teach your children the importance of a well-rounded diet. Don’t rush your meals and practice good manners. Your behaviors and habits have an influence on your children. Set an example you can be proud of.
