Steps to Stay Active This Winter – 5 Fun Ideas for Families
When the weather gets cold, which it is already, we are likely to snuggle up inside the house and stay put.
While the relaxation is rewarding and recharging, it is important to stay active for our overall health and wellness. We don’t tend to exercise as much as we do in the warmer months, which is understandable. But you and the kids can beat the winter “blahs” and get moving!
Here are 5 ways parents and kids can get motivated…
Dancing
Turn up some lively family-friendly music and shake it all about! Your kids will love seeing everyone having a blast and they won’t even consider it exercise. Show off your best moves and make it fun. You can even videotape your “dance parties” and watch them when you need a good laugh!
Indoor Sports
See what sorts of indoor sports are available near you. It could be ice skating, roller skating, ice hockey, indoor tennis, indoor volleyball, gymnastics, karate, or indoor basketball. Your child can join a local youth team, or you can sign them up for private lessons. Your child’s school or the local library may have some information to help you get going.
Join a Gym
Gym membership sales soar as the New Year approaches. Join the masses as you make your New Year’s fitness resolutions a reality. Start out going a few days a week and you’ll get stronger soon enough. Inquire about kids’ fitness programs or on-site childcare while you work out.
Workout Videos
Rather than “vegging out” in front of the TV or playing on your smart devices, turn on a workout video. You can find tons of them on YouTube for all ages and activity levels. There are many exercises that can be done at home without the need for any equipment. No more excuses!
Yoga
If there is a yoga studio near you, check out the class schedule. Many yoga studios have beginners’ and kids’ classes. This peaceful practice will help you become more flexible and will tone your muscles. As you get better, you can progress to more challenging poses.
