Playground and Park Safety Tips

While the playground and park are meant to be spots for fun and enjoyment, there is always the chance for uninvited danger. It’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when it comes to our little ones. Keep your kids as protected as possible by following these tips and bits of proactive advice.

Keep Your Child in Eyeshot

Of course, when you are at the playground or park with very young children, you don’t ever leave their side. But even as kids get older and we let them off on their own a bit to explore, always keep them a safe distance from you. Just being at the same location simply isn’t enough, you must be able to see them. If an injury occurs, you will know right away. If a suspicious stranger is approaching, you can whisk your child away instantly. If you even miss a moment by sitting too far away, you can lose precious seconds that can make a major impact. Help out other parents by keeping an eye on their kids too.

Bring Supplies

When you are away from your car or home, you won’t have access to things as readily when you are at the playground or park. Bring along some first aid items such as bandages, bug spray, alcohol wipes, etc. in case there is a medical situation. It’s also important to bring some water or juice to keep the children well-hydrated, even if it’s not too hot out. All that playing and running around will require regular rehydration. It’s also a good idea to have some small snacks with you. Kids get hungry quickly and a little nosh will keep their blood sugar and hunger in check after a long day of play. Choose non-perishables like granola bars, fruit leather, baggies of cereal, trail mix, and the like.

Have a “Stranger Danger” Plan

No matter how much you plan and watch, unfortunately, there is always the chance for unforeseen trouble. Have a plan with your child. Make sure he never goes off with someone he doesn’t know. Create a code word that someone else must know in order to speak with him. Teach him to shout for help if he’s ever afraid or in a compromising situation. Plan according to your child’s age and level of development. Prepare for the worst but do not scare your child. Make sure he understands you are here to protect him and he has the tools to do the same.

Safety and security are a must, but so is having fun. If you are prepared accordingly, you can relax knowing you’ve done your part to keep your precious child safe and out of harm’s way.
