Motivating Your Child to Read More
Reading is a fundamental part of educational development in children. Some kids find that reading is “work” or something that is only school-related. That’s certainly not the case! Reading is an enjoyable activity that can create an avid reader for life in a child that is exposed to the joys of great books at an early age. Here are some tips to motivate your child to read more often, which will generate a great habit that will surely become a wonderful hobby. With so many books to choose from, your child will definitely find her favorite genres and want to read in school and at home.
Make it a Family Affair
Designate a bit of time after school or each evening before bedtime to a family reading session. Take turns reading your child’s favorite books and even act out the characters in different voices. Make sure to include everyone so this reading time becomes a memorable family tradition that your child can reflect back on with nostalgia. When everyone views reading as an entertainment activity, like watching TV, the kids will be more inclined to ask to read rather than veg out in front of the television.
Listen to Books on Tape
While on long car rides or just around the house, play an audio book for the kids to hear. They will enjoy listening to adventures in a clear voice while your drive or do other quiet activities at home. Like a TV show, the kids will be eager to tune into their book to find out what happens next. Audio books are a great alternative when picking up a book is not doable at the given moment.
Visit the Library & Book Store
Instill a love and appreciation of reading by making regular visits to the local library or book store. With so many options at your kid’s fingertips, she will be excited to loan out a new book or buy one for special occasions. Many libraries hold children’s reading groups and bookstores often have author visits and readings as well. Your child will enjoy the trips and browsing through all the wonderful literature.
