Water Safety:

  • Lifeguards: Always choose a beach with lifeguards on duty. They are trained to spot danger and help in emergencies.
  • Buddy System: Teach your kids to always swim with a buddy, even if it’s you.
  • Know the Water: Watch the waves and currents before going in. Strong currents can be dangerous.
  • Swim Lessons: Enroll your kids in swimming lessons to improve their water skills.
  • Floatation Devices: Use Coast Guard-approved life jackets for young children or weak swimmers.

Sun Protection:

  • Seek Shade: Look for shady areas or use a beach umbrella to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays.
  • Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every two hours, even on cloudy days. Reapplying is crucial for continuous protection. Don’t forget their ears, neck, and feet.
  • Sun-Protective Clothing: Dress your kids in long-sleeved rash guards (check out these from Target), hats, and sunglasses.
  • Stay Hydrated: Remind your kids to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Beach Hazards:

  • Rip Currents: Learn how to spot and escape rip currents. Teach your kids to stay calm and swim parallel to the shore if caught in one.
  • Marine Life: Be aware of jellyfish, stingrays, and other marine life. Teach your kids to avoid touching them.
  • Beach Debris: Watch out for broken glass, sharp objects, and shell fragments.

Other Tips:

  • Supervision: Never leave your kids unattended, even briefly.
  • Emergency Plan: Know where the nearest lifeguard station and first aid kit are located.
  • Beach Toys: Bring plenty of beach toys to keep kids entertained and occupied.
  • Healthy Snacks: Pack healthy snacks and plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated and energized. This is the best way to ensure your kids have the energy they need for a fun day at the beach.
  • Beach Etiquette: Teach your kids to respect other beachgoers by cleaning up after themselves and being mindful of noise levels.

These tips can help you have a safe and pleasurable beach day with your family.
