Why Good Nutrition Helps Kids Concentrate in School
School is so important for our kids. It’s where they spend a large portion of their day learning academics, how to socialize, and grow to become the future leaders of tomorrow. Concentration is key in order for kids to take in as much knowledge as they can although there may be distractions that get in the way. One way parents can do their part in helping their kids learn without obstacles is to make sure they have the proper nutrition.
Start Off Strong
A wholesome breakfast gets kids off to a good start. When kids go to school on an empty stomach, their brains cannot work as well as they should. After many hours of sleep, the body cannot function to its best capabilities without nourishment. Send your kid off with a balanced breakfast such as eggs and toast with juice, some oatmeal and bananas, yogurt and granola, or even a peanut butter and jam sandwich. If there is no time for breakfast before you leave the house, send your child off with an on-the-go option like a bag of trail mix, hard boiled eggs, or a whole-grain breakfast bar. If you are not able to provide breakfast for your child, many schools offer free breakfast programs for students. A grumbly stomach will distract your child and all he will think about is food rather than what he’s at school for – to learn.
Keep the Momentum Going
Snacks and lunch are a must. Even with a filling breakfast, little bodies need lots of nourishment throughout the day to stay on track. Pack small and healthful goodies to nibble on at snack time such as mixed nuts, dried fruit, pretzels, baby carrots, or granola bars. Your child’s ability to better concentrate after some fuel will increase and keep him going. A hearty lunch is a must too. Go for nutritious options like a salad with grilled chicken, a turkey and cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread, hummus with a pita and veggies, or a zesty stew packed in a thermos. Some schools provide lunch too with many healthy options to select from.
Sip All Day
Hydration is imperative as well. Be sure your child knows to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep the mind sharp and those juices flowing. 100% fruit drinks and low-fat milk are additional choices to break up the monotony and provide needed vitamins for your child’s developing mind.
When you know your child is filled with good nutrition, you can be sure his ability to concentrate in school will be improved. If you find that your child still has issues with concentration or paying attention, talk with their teacher about how to solve the problem.
Happy eating and learning!
