Our Value: Bucket Filling

This month, we are focusing on the value of Bucket Filling—a simple but powerful way to teach children about kindness, empathy, and making others feel appreciated.

The idea is that everyone carries an invisible “bucket” that can be filled with positive words and actions or emptied by unkind behavior. By encouraging children to “fill buckets,” we help them build caring relationships, develop self-confidence, and create a supportive community.

Teaching this value early helps our youngest learners grow into thoughtful, compassionate people who understand the importance of kindness in everyday life.

Examples of Bucket Filling for Kids:

  • Saying “please” and “thank you” without being reminded
  • Inviting a classmate to join in play
  • Helping a friend zip their coat or clean up a mess
  • Giving someone a compliment like, “I like your drawing!”
  • Sharing toys or taking turns without fuss
  • Listening when someone else is talking
  • Smiling at a friend who looks sad
  • Writing a kind note or drawing a picture for someone
  • Telling a grown-up something nice another child did
  • Comforting a friend who gets hurt or feels left out

These small acts of kindness may seem simple, but each one fills a bucket, both for the person receiving it and the child giving it. The more we encourage this behavior, the more natural it becomes!
