Healthy Lunch Sandwiches Kids Will Love

Packing school lunch is a task many moms and dads do daily.

Kids are used to PB&J or tuna fish salad sandwiches, and the same old lunch gets boring. Parents can shake things up with some healthy sandwiches the kids will enjoy, giving you more options to make their lunchbox exciting to open.

Of course, there is always room for the old standbys, especially if your kids like their regular routine. But when you want to surprise them with something new, these three sandwich ideas below will be a real treat. The fact that they are healthy is a plus.

Hummus and Veggies on Whole Wheat

Get those veggies into your kids’ system on a sandwich. Spread a nice amount of hummus onto one piece of whole wheat bread and top with crisp lettuce, sliced tomatoes, alfalfa sprouts, thinly sliced cucumber, and roasted red peppers. Add a swipe of mustard if you desire. Top with another slice of whole wheat and your sandwich is complete. Slice in quarters and pack.

This sandwich tastes great with vegetable juice. *You can make this on a pita as well.

Greek Yogurt Banana Roll Up

Go for something on the sweeter side with an easy-to-prep Greek yogurt banana roll up. Take a large plain tortilla wrap and spread some plain or vanilla Greek yogurt all over one side to the edges. Fill the middle with thinly sliced banana and add a drizzle of honey or agave syrup if desired. Roll up tightly and cut in half or into “pinwheels.”

Pack an applesauce or juice to go along with it. *You can also make this wrap with thinly sliced apples or pears.

Italian Chicken Sandwich

On a small crusty roll, layer a serving of sliced grilled chicken breast and a slice or two of low-fat mozzarella cheese. Spread marinara sauce onto the top half of the roll and sprinkle with some oregano and grated parmesan cheese. Close the sandwich and slice in half.

A refreshing lemon-lime flavored water or seltzer will hit the spot with this sandwich.

*If you don’t want meat, you can use cooked eggplant slices, Portobello mushroom, or thick slices of ripe tomato.

What are some of your kids’ favorite sandwiches? We’d love to read your tasty ideas.
