Healthy Halloween Treats You Can Make with the Kids

While it’s fun to trick-or-treat and collect tons of candy, sometimes enough is enough. Make some Halloween treats with the kids that are much better for them but they’ll enjoy just as much. You’ll have fun making them together and the kids can even share with classmates and friends. Here are 3 ideas you are sure to love.

“Candy Corn” Parfaits

Kids love those sugary sweet morsels of candy corn and they are something to look forward to once the Halloween season approaches. A few treats here and there are certainly OK and expected, especially on a fun holiday like Halloween, but too much of these sticky snacks are no good for little teeth and bellies. Get the all of the fun of candy corn by creating a much healthier candy corn parfait. Here’s how to make one:

Use a martini glass to get that acorn/triangle shape to make this even more impressive. First, spoon in ¼ cup of low fat or fat free vanilla yogurt to create the point of the candy corn parfait. Next, add 1/3 cup of peach yogurt. Finally, add 1/3 cup of canned diced peaches or mandarin orange segments. Top with crushed graham crackers for crunch. You can also make this a frozen treat by using frozen yogurt or fruity sherbet. So delicious and much better for the kids than the candy variety.

Worms in Dirt

Don’t worry, this snack isn’t real worms in dirt! It’s a treat that kids love because of its silly name and cool appearance. Oftentimes, this treat is made with chocolate cake and gummy candy, but this version is a lot healthier and just as tasty. Worms in dirt is a perfect Halloween party food thanks to its spooky name. Here’s how to make a healthier version:

In a clear plastic or glass cup, spoon in ½ cup applesauce mixed with cinnamon to make it darker in color to resemble dirt. Next, stick in a few thin pretzel sticks to become the worms. Add a few sprigs of mint to make the dirt look more realistic and serve. The kids will love this snack and it’s actually good for them. Who knew “worms and dirt” could taste so good?

Mini Pumpkin Pies in a Cup

Halloween is the time for pumpkin and who doesn’t love a slice of fresh pumpkin pie. You can get the same flavor with a fraction of the fat and calories with this mini version which is perfect for kids:

Mix ½ cup canned pumpkin with some cinnamon and sugar or Splenda. Set aside. Crumble vanilla cookies or graham crackers into the bottom of a cup then spoon the pumpkin mixture on top. Follow that with a small dollop of low fat whipped cream or some vanilla yogurt. This treat will be a favorite every Halloween!
